Harvesting is set to begin in the Squirrel Cove area on Wednesday February 15. The current plan, as announced in November 2016, is to harvest 250 meters of cedar and 20 meters of fir along the road in SQ 4. This will be a individual tree selection, spaced out along the new road to minimize the overall impact.
There will also be 30 meters of fir harvested in the south end of SQ 3. In total, this will be 8 – 9 truck loads. The CFGP also expects to produce 25 – 35 cords of firewood for our communities, although this number is not finalized.
This project will also allow us to deactivate the last 100 meters of the new logging road in SQ 5, in order to reduce future maintenance obligations and increase the growing area.
The CFGP has heard feedback from many members of the community regarding this project as well as input on future planning, and feels that this small project is the best way forward that balances the needs of the community with the needs of our local value added producers.
